Nagercoil (BNS): The air launched trials of the supersonic cruise missile BRAHMOS will be completed by 2012, said Dr Sivathanu Pillai, Chief Controller, R and D, DRDO.

Dr Pillai who is also CEO and MD, BrahMos Aerospace, said preparations are also on to launch the missile from submarines.

The sea and land-based versions of the 290 km range BRAHMOS, which have been successfully launched, have since been inducted into the navy and army respectively.

The missile travels at speeds of Mach 2.5 to 2.8 and is the world's fastest cruise missile.

BRAHMOS air launch version has lesser weight and additional rear fins for aerodynamic stability during separation from the aircraft and launch. The required modifications in SU 30-MKI for interface with the missile launcher and integration with the weapon control of the aircraft are being carried out together with Indian Air Force and Sukhoi design bureau.
