ONTARIO (BNS): General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada has received a contract worth $133.5 million from the Canadian Government to upgrade 66 LAV III combat vehicles of the Canadian Army.

The new contract is a modification of the $1 billion contract earlier awarded to the company in October 2011 to upgrade 550 LAV IIIs of the Canadian Army.

The LAV III Upgrade Project will now modernise a total of 616 vehicles, significantly enhancing their survivability, mobility and firepower and extending the fleet's lifecycle to 2035, General Dynamics said.

Survivability upgrades on the armoured vehicle would include introduction of double-V-hull technology, add-on armour protection and energy-attenuating seat to provide the crew members greater protection against mine blasts, IEDs and other threats.

Mobility system upgrades on the LAV would incorporate a more powerful engine, robust driveline and suspension, and a height management system which would enhance the vehicle's automotive performance, handling characteristics and payload capacity.

The 25mm turret's crew ergonomics will be improved by incorporating larger hatches, and its capabilities will be enhanced by the addition of the latest technologies, including improved fire control, thermal, day and low-light sights and data displays, the company said.

Work is expected to be completed in 2017, the company said.
