Iran, Russia to launch two satellites

TEHRAN (BNS): Iran plans to launch two satellites with the help of Russia this year, a media report said.

The agreement to launch the satellites - a remote sensing satellite and a telecommunications satellite - was signed last week in Russia during a meeting between Iranian Communications and Information Minister Reza Taqipour and Russian Communications and Mass media Minister Igor Olegovich, a Tehran Times report said.

The new satellites, which are designed and produced to decrease telecom traffic between Russia and Europe, will be equipped with filming applications and data-image transmission sensors, according to reports.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad earlier this year unveiled the indigenously produced Tolou, Mesbah – 2 and Navid telecommunication satellites. Iran had also successfully launched its first research satellite, Omid (Hope), in 2009.
