MOSCOW (BNS): Russia plans to develop a new liquid-propellant Iintercontinental Ballistic Missile capable of breaking into the US missile defence system.
According to a Ria Novosti report, a decision has been taken to build a new silo-launched heavy missile that will have "enhanced capability to breach a hypothetical US missile defence system."
The report quoting Strategic Missile Forces Chief Lt. Gen. Sergei Karakayev said, Russia's solid-propellant ICBMs may be unable to penetrate missile defences.
The new missile will replace the Voyevoda R-36M2 Satan ICBM, he added.
The General also said, the Strategic Missile Forces will test launch 11 ICBMs in 2012.
The United States is building a missile defence system in Europe to protect against possible attack from rogue states while Moscow has opposed the deployment of US-led NATO missile defence facilities near its borders.
