New chief of Indian Navy's Eastern Command

Vice Admiral Anil Chopra is at present the Director General of Indian Coast Guard.

NEW DELHI (PTI): Vice Admiral Anil Chopra will take over as the commander of Indian Navy's Vishakhapatanam-based Eastern Command on October 31 succeeding Vice Admiral Anup Singh who is retiring.

Chopra is at present the Director General of Indian Coast Guard.

The Eastern Naval Command, one of the two operational commands of Indian Navy, has jurisdiction over the entire Bay of Bengal as well as a large part of the Indian Ocean.

Against the backdrop of increasing Chinese activities in the eastern region, the command is undergoing transformation as several new ships, submarines and aircraft are added to the command's asset base.

"The Command is also seeing enhancement of capability and infrastructure as required to meet growing demands of maritime security on the Eastern seaboard," a Navy release said.

In his career spanning over 38 years, Chopra has held several important staff and command appointments including that of Flag Officer Commanding of Navy's western fleet.
