Russia successfully test fires Bulava missile

MOSCOW (BNS): The Russian Navy successfully test fired a Bulava sea-launched ballistic missile on Thursday.

RIA Novosti quoted a spokesperson of the Defence Ministry saying that the missile hit targets on testing grounds in Kamchatka in Russia’s Far East.

The missile is carried by Borey-class Project 955 nuclear-powered submarines and has been designed by the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology.

The fourth-generation Borey-class nuclear-powered submarines armed with Bulava missiles will form the core of Russia's fleet of modern strategic submarines.

Yury Dolgoruky, the first submarine in the series built at Sevmash plant in northern Arkhangelsk Region will soon join the Russian Navy. The submarine will be equipped with 16 Bulava (SS-NX-30) ballistic missiles, each carrying up to 10 nuclear warheads and having a range of 8,000 km (5,000 miles).

Alexander Nevsky and Vladimir Monomakh, two other Borey-class submarines, are under production at the Sevmash plant.
